Bird Watching on Skadar Lake, Montenegro

Skadar Lake is a home for herons, bitterns, grebes, kingfishers, egrets, terns, cormorants and many more.  Unfortunately I wasn’t lucky to see the famous Dalmatian pelicans. In fact, I’d have to take a boat for 6 hours to go on the south of the lake and it wasn’t sure to meet them. As I got to know, Spring or early Summer is the best season to discover the lake.

Skadarsko jezero, Montenegro

That’s the biggest natural lake on the Balkans, being a border between Montenegro and Albania. Lake Skadar is the natural bird reserve in Europe, having 270 bird species, the most important is pelican, and 34 fish species as carp, bleak, eel. 

The best way to discover the beauty of the lake is to arrive in Virpazar (if you drive from Bar, I highly recommend you to take the tunnel; it’s easier and faster road), a little town/village and there take a boat. There are few “companies” or rather little private boats which propose a tour for 25 euros per hour. In fact, the price is negotiable, if you want to make a longer trip. It’s also good to know that they can help you in finding a room in a good price and advice a good restaurant.

Going to the sun…

Lately a lot of things happened. In fact it’s like a rain of bad things. The show must go on and there is no way back. Soon my life will be completely changed. Soon I’ll have to find myself in a new reality, but before it comes, it’s a time to take a deep breath and discover unknown countries.
